about

Soul-Hop, the new album by Princess of Controversy is the musical soundtrack for BreakThrough, the musical (written by Princess of Controversy). BreakThrough uses the artistic expression “soul-hop,” a term branded to describe Princess of Controversy’s style of musical performance. She combines hip-hop beats and flow, socially conscious lyrics, poetic tone, and theatrical monologues, wordplay and presence. There are hints of jazz, blues, soul, alternative rock, funk and free verse mixed throughout the album and scenes in the play, BREAKTHROUGH, the soul-hop musical. This album is dedicated to blending the 2 artistic loves of POC, theater and music.

Track Name: P.O.S.H. (Princess of Soul-Hop) Intro
I'm a Queen, Queen, Queen, Queen
Queen Princess! Soul-Hop!
Princess of Soul-Hop!
I'm trying to lift souls, yo that's my goal
"It's the only thing that will make me whole"
Rap, scat, R&B, jazz, blues, me's, you's...TRUTHS
Princess, Queen, Woman, Being, I am all of these things
It's rap, but it's also life
I am thinking of a way to save my soul
& Put me in control of the ultimate goal
Cause I'm thinking of a way to save my life,
Cause I'm teh reason for my success or my strife
PMS, physical-mental-spiritual--cycle of life--daily ritual
I'm a Queen, Queen, Queen, Queen
I'm gon rap, act & sing
Cause soul-hop is what I bring
You know what I mean, cause it's my thing
I am the Princess of Soul-Hop
Track Name: I'm Feeling Myself (Ft. Andaiye)
Bionic-supersonic spells that I cast
Quick-witted, fitted, swift to siphon some gas
Magic-emphatic packaged with first class
I ain't even got open and I'm luring that ass
Heroic-stoic call me avant garde
Enlightening-exciting interpreting your cards
Fire-desire blazing heat that hard
I'm flowing so potent, I'm brought the boys to the yard

I'm Fly! Who I?
Yes I! No Need to Ask Why
Is that Right?
Don't sweat the Technique, I'm Feeling Myself

Funny-hunh hunny? Crafting lines so slick
Blatent-patient don't write my rhymes too quick
Solid-not stolid, yes I'm built that thick
You think that you can break me, it takes more than a whip
Harriet-Marriot under overground I travel
New improved rhyme schemes, I dibble & I dabble
Choosy-booshie this girl don't freestyle battle
Cuase lyrically you;re the house slave & I'm repping for the chattel

I'm Fly! Who I?
Yes I! No Need to Ask Why
Is that Right?
Don't sweat the Technique, I'm Feeling Myself

Please just (don't trip off of me)
Cause I'm (I'm just feeling me)
If you're not (That's alright with me)
Cause I didn't write this song for you, I wrote it for me

I'm Fly! Who I?
Yes I! No Need to Ask Why
Is that Right?
Don't sweat the Technique, I'm Feeling Myself
Track Name: Away
Can I go to Paris where Josephine Baker called home?
First time I was introduced to France was Toblerone--
My teacher was wrong 'cause it was made by the Swiss
"Je crois que non", but too young to question it
Let me switch my tastes up, try some new food groups
Fly to Lebanon & cop some homemade fattoush
And UGH! I know it don't sound too good
'Cause they don't push it like its ice cream in your neighborhood
Guess I'll fly to Italy to get a bottle of pesto
Went to 5 grocery stores in the hood, I had to let go
Thought about Canada, but heard it was cold
But it's just ten hours driving, do it in the summer yo
In your next class report, say you're going to Africa
Some may point & stare, some might laugh at 'ya
But if they knew the spirits they'd encounter they'd be backing you
And when you come back, watch the questions they be asking ya

Can I get away to see (AWAY)
Something new for me
Can I get away to see (AWAY)
Something different than this scene

So maybe I took you too far, bordelines I like to stretch
So let me bring you back to comfort inside the US
If you play video games to relieve your stress
Try picking up a book the next time you're vexed
If you find yourself listening to the same ol' music
Throw on some Afro-Cuban, Celia Cruz will do it
Pursue it, you got bigger dreams than your friends?
Then move it, their season has come to to an end
Increase your dividends and expand your business
Try meditation as your new form of fitness
Get this, try a new place eat
Ina different part fo the city than down the street
Check out a documentary, a foreign movie
you might redefine what you used to find as groovy
And as an artist, try to rock at new spaces
Know when you art is stale so you don't wind up complacent

Can I get away to see (AWAY)
Something new for me
Can I get away to see (AWAY)
Something different than this scene

Away-ay-ay-ay
Time for me to CHANGE

Loving Life
Chorus:
I saw the sun shine, when I lifted my blinds
And I realized, there’s a party going on outside
See loving life is the deal, don’t think that joy can be concealed
So open up your window, don’t be afraid to live, to love to feel
Verse 1:
Get myself together then, soak up the sun and wind
Throw on my tittie shirt, a good day’s about to begin
Meditate with self, issues that need be dealt
Throwing out the bad thoughts, so good one’s can be felt
Ready to hit the streets, hop in Betsy she beats
We bout to build and politic with my real peeps
But wait up hold fast, I gotta stop for gas
The gauge is broken, Betsy’s choking, that’ll be my ass
Hop right back in the car, pull up at X bar
Walk through the double doors, feeling like a superstar
Vanilla appletini, with caramel in it
I sip it slow while my spirit gets loose for a minute
My peeps we get to rapping, conscious thoughts and laughing
This be the good life I done manifest to happen
Throw back a drink or two, devise a plan to do
The party door to ym destiny, yes I am walking through
Repeat Chorus
Verse 2:
Reflect on the day, balance my work and play
Gotta fuse what I learned into what I say
Here comes this spirit song and the message is long
I’m running late to my job, but would I really be wrong
If I just kept on writing, boss might say I’m trifling
But if I don’t honor my spirit, my life be stifling
I gotta love me, it’s a necessity
Cause if I aint loving life, then what’s it really mean
It’s time for romance, baby I love to dance
Flow with my energy, I’ll show you my lion’s prance
Lovemaking’s who we are, I ain’t afraid to star
In my own video, cause Imma take it real far
But hold up, back to work, serving tables with perk
Having to be nice when these motherfuckers (peoples) really jerks
That’s why I read the Secret, so positive I keep it
Staying focused, loving life is what I really needed
Repeat Chorus

Are you ready, do it different
This is the hardest dollar you spent (and it’s worth it)
Gotta give up, what you’re used to (used to)
If you wanna do what you do (do what you do)
You’re an artist, and you’re destined
Are you hungry to learn this lesson?
Verse 2:
If you’re straddling the borderline (borderline)
Of your heart’s desire, and your will to survive (your will to survive)
Be sure you know what’s right to sacrifice (sacrifice)
Cause when you give it up, you will feel so alive (so alive)

Took an educated risk to reach my goals
Repeat Chorus
Verse 3:
Thought I was crazy, college-educated baby
Went from working in offices to serving tables lately
That fed my pockets, didn’t feed my soul
And if I wasn’t doing both I knew I wouldn’t be whole
Never was the type to sell cd’s out of trunks
But I been working like a slave, and hadn’t written for months
Had to sacrifice security to see this completed
Cause security’s what I wanted but sacrifice what I needed
Now I know what it takes to not struggle (not struggle)
Do what makes you happy so you won’t be troubled (won’t be troubled)
Creator told me, to get, I must give (I must give)
No longer hungry, cause I fed my gift (fed my gift)
Repeat Chorus
Track Name: Full Circle
Full Circle
Damn boo, should this be called a twist of fate?
I used to check for your sister’s man and now we date
You were cute and young, thought you’d try to “set me up”
But you loved me long time, I had to let up
You taught me many things although five years younger
Learned to never underestimate one man’s hunger
I wondered, why you never budged from my side
When people tried to judge me, you remained my “Clyde”
I ain’t gon’ lie, still reminisce on those days
We were like “fuck the world” Utopia’s our way
But hey-hey-hey, how long can you live in a fantasy
Reality struck and we still trapped in vanity
The fact that you were Muslim, and your family hated me
Forced you to choose between your woman and your family tree
As karma would have it from prior infidelities
You cheated on me, lesson received
Chorus:
When I close my eyes (when I close my eyes)
I think of all the lessons I’ve learned (I’ve learned)
The pain was real, it burned
I’ve changed, I’ve come full circle
(Repeat Once)
Verse 2:
Damn boo, you were fly as hell
Although from first glance, most women couldn’t tell
But I knew well, the workings of the “inner chi”
Talked for hours at the venue and traded energies
You were the sickest lyricist this sis had ever heard
Captivated all my eyes, especially my third
Say word, that’s why I put you on my album
Cause us together’s like kryptonite and cum
A power couple, we held church for the people
If you were spinning records, then I’d attach the needle
Fell in love with your spirit ‘fore I asked you more
I assumed that you didn’t have a girl from the door
What’s more when I found out, I didn’t even care
Pretended that she didn’t exist ‘cause you were always there
It’s clear, that my assumption was wrong
Cause when she popped up pregnant, you were gone
Repeat Chorus
Verse 3:
Damn boo, this gon hurt the worst
Thought no man could ever hurt me worse than the second verse
And how perverse, you didn’t even have a girl
So I thought that I was saved when you came into my world
Quirky and corny, hell, I like corny dudes
The sex was passionate, so your other traits subdued
But ooo, subdued a little too much
Shoulda listened when you said you didn’t like “couple stuff”
Nigga what? This lion rules this here
And you ain’t gon be fucking me if you ain’t claiming me, dear
Since that was clear, you became my man
But it wouldn’t last long, Gemini’s don’t like to stand
Still for too long or they begin to stray
They’ll blow into your life and out the very next day
But they’ll come back and forth like you did for 3 years
Until the pendulum is broke and the end is clear
Bridge:
Thank you to all the men I’ve known
Good or bad experiences, I’ve grown
Come full circle to reflect alone
Creator then gave ne love on a throne
Repeat Chorus
Repeat Bridge
Track Name: Abused
Abused
Verse 1:
Known for throwing marbles at her neighbor, spit balls with her paper
They say she’s so mean, she doesn’t share her now n’ laters
Their words are vapor, didn’t read the clues
She holds her breath in when he does it, hoping she can turn blue
You wouldn’t want to be her living scared to tell
Teacher labels her rage a problem child from hell
Well hide and go seek doesn’t seem so fun
When your innocence been taken since the age of 1
Praying that her teachers mad, it’s her cry for help
Not knowing after school detention really saves herself
From 2 hours less of being awkwardly felt
Don’t judge her by her actions, it’s the hands she’s dealt (but you don’t know)
Chorus:
You don’t even know what she’s been through (so don’t judge by the way that she walks)
Cause she’s been abused (and you could never live the life she walked)
You don’t even know what she’s been through (so don’t be blinded by the way that she smiles at you)
Cause she’s been abused (and although happy some of her days are still blue)
You don’t even know what she’s been through (and though she seems as though she’s got it together)
Cause she’s been abused (and although tough, she’s still frail as a feather)
You don’t even know what she’s been through (been violated for so long)
Cause she’s been abused (and never told body she was wronged)
Verse 2:
Yo, fly girl, so popular in school, gets to high school then she starts dressing like a dude
Her mama wonders what happened to her baby, did she not teach her the rules to being a lady?
No prom, girl-talk and shopping at the mall, she’d rather hang with her dudes all night and play ball
All this she said she’s always felt from birth, she’s different from the other girls who walk this earth
Send her cries to her friends, cause her mama’s always working
And when she’s off, she’s dealing with each and every jerk and
Dick and Tom, ain’t got no time to be a moms
Her neglect leads her daughter into a woman’s arms
Oh the harm it does to leave a child alone
Without assurance of a mother’s love, forced to be grown
18 years have now passed , now she’s coming out too
Now that she’s a dude, can she get attention too? (but you don’t know)

Repeat Chorus
Track Name: The Pulpit
The Pulpit

Now before we even get started (POC disclaimer)
They gon be some people mad about this here topic
(So why don’t you stop it?) Cause I’m spitting what I feel
May not apply to you but to a lot of folks its real
People say keep this concealed, some things you shouldn’t question
I musta missed church when they were teaching that lesson
A blessing, yes I am, and didn’t learn that in church,
And if you offended by what I just said, then the rest of this song’s gonna hurt worse
“So go on ahead and turn it off before you get mad, now the rest of you let’s go”
As it is written, there is none righteous, no not one
Romans 3:10, now get a load of that one
Romans 3:23, for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God
Can I get head nod and put down that façade
So whether you sitting in the pew, or sitting outside this is true
Divided by religious views but UNITED under the red, white and blue
Chorus:
(We be) Sitting in the pulpit, listening to the preacher spit
I realize why people don’t go to church no more
(We be) Sitting in the pulpit, listening to some bullshit
I realize why my people don’t go to church anymore
Repeat
Track Name: The Music
The Music

I know I have been changed (4 x’s)

The game has been twisted
You don’t know why I spit this
Music is uplifting
Reasons are ridiculous
Chills in my spine
Healing over time
People feeling fine
Now is that a crime?
You can take my drums
And shit on my goals
That do me nothing
It’s in my soul
I make love to this music like the preacher preach the word
Baptized with strong spirit, you can’t kill this mockingbird
Tweedle-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dum (repeat)
If I feel like I want to sing this whole line
I’m gonna do it cause this voice is mine…oooo….cause it’s all about the music
And if I feel like I wanna rap this part in the rhyme
I’m gonna do it and shine and have a good time…oooo…cause it’s all about the music

Bridge:
Cause I-I-I….won’t let the music die
Sing rejoice and cry
It ain’t about a show
It’s about letting go

Chorus:
The music, the feeling, something beyond control
Ooo it’s, healing, from rap to rock n’ roll
Everybody hit the dancefloor, we gon’ do it old school, like solid gold
Nobody’s got to tell you, it’s already in your soul

I got some shit on my mind
Weighs heavy for a time
But when I sing this music it frees my mind…ooo….cause it’s all about the music
See I ain’t got no record deal
Cause right now it’s more important that I get healed…ooo…cause it’s all about the music
See I ain’t got no record deal
Cause right now it’s more important that I get healed…ooo…cause it’s all about the music

Repeat Bridge

Repeat Chorus

It’s already…it’s already…in your soul
It’s already…it’s already…in your soul (repeat and fade out)
Track Name: Prince Charming
Prince Charming
Verse 1:
Red berets and heart necklace
Remembering your last days, those were the best
Yes, the last name was professed
Be the BEST in this game, don’t take nothing less
Dream endless, be not ashamed to manifest
He cooked fish on Sundays, those days we ‘sposed to rest
Guess he had a special deal with God, nevertheless
Patterned myself after you, every single step
You taught me how to drive a stick, “clutch to the left”
So cool and confident, you always did impress
Upon me that I was better than the rest
Repeatedly over and over like Memorex
A love so deep, I had to etch it in a sketch
A Prince Charming crowing his Princess
Can travel ‘round the world from the east to the west
But nothing beats the love of my daddy, Willie Best
Chorus:
My Prince Charming (charming), Yes I hear you (hear you)
You have led me to write this song (this song)
Every parent (parent), wants to know that (know that)
That their child knows right from wrong (from wrong)
My Prince Charming (charming), you danced with me (dance with me)
Now rest your days been long (been long)
Now cry freedom (freedom), cause your spirit (your spirit)
Brought me right back where I belong (belong), right back to this song, yeah (this song), back to being strong (being strong)
Verse 2:
1978, it had to be a good year
A hot August day, you could fry an egg in the atmosphere
Daddy said his Princess would be here, and if you were blocking her pedastol, better stand clear
Yeah, for me, my father was a true gangster
“Baby you got a lion’s heart, don’t let nobody spank you”
I took it to heart, grew love for the arts
Nobody told me to go, I was already on start
So smart girl, you can do anything
You have the power to bring life to all that you bring
I’ll be your team, I’ll be your biggest fan
Don’t you accept nothing less than the greatest from man
Damn, your words permeate, even when your long gone
When challenges tackle me brush my knees off and walk on
You taught me that a “little dirt ain’t gonna hurt you”
And rising when you fall only builds your virtue
Repeat Chorus
